DVD packaging pt. II - Sketches
Here are some sketches of the Mean Girls "So Fetch!" Edition 3-disk DVD set. On the left, you have the transparent plastic outer case holding all the contents (dvd in front, Official 'Plastics' Gear in back) w/outer sticker announcing the "So Fetch!" Edition and contents below. On the right is the actual dvd w/slipcase, a pink t-shirt (paper band holding folded t-shirt) and 2 tags (for t-shirt & "instant Halloween costume" bunny/cat/whatever-I-can-find-that-will-fit-in-the-box ears).
I still need to decide where the soundtrack CD will be placed and how intricate the booklet within the actual DVD case will be.

DVD Special Edition Research & Ideas
Back to work! I wanted to post a bit about the research and ideas I have for the special edition DVD project. I began by browsing my own collection of movies, and came across one of my favorite special editions of late, the Target Exclusive Iron Man DVD...
Sure the opening face-plate which reveals the disc is cool, but I like the presentation of the transparent box with the special package inside. Other releases (Transformers, Hulk) have been using this trend also. I wasn't sure how I wanted to utilize a transparent box, but the possibilities seemed pretty open.
Then the special edition Valley of the Dolls caught my eye, perhaps because the slipcase reminded me of a book, maybe the brightly colored plastic just stuck out...
Either way, it looked like something I might want to incorporate. I thought the colored dvd case and the slipcase idea would lend itself well to a special edition of Mean Girls. I could use the slipcase concept as a "Burn Book" which houses the discs...
I could even put the "Burn Book" (with discs) inside a transparent plastic case, and include some extras: "Official Plastics Gear," t-shirt and/or accessories.
Finally I took out another classic, The Lord of the Rings special editions, which are packaged like books, to further get ideas about book-like dvd cases, and figure out just how elaborate this needs to be.
And just an FYI, here's the existing release of Mean Girls on DVD (with soundtrack)...
Overall, this is already shaping up to be a fun project. Can't wait to start sketching!

Project 2 Sketches! w00t!!
So here we have a few possible directions for project 2. I've selected Johnson & Johnson Band-Aid brand adhesive bandages (maybe you've heard of them). My favorite was the translucent plastic dispenser case - think Listerine breath strips packaging - but you really can't fit that many Band-aids in those, and it's rather difficult to come up with a design solution for something so small and clear. The other tape-like dispensers would rely on pulling bandages from a roll. This might be okay for gauze, but for adhesive bandages it seems a bit unsanitary not to have them individually wrapped as they come now, no? So I've come back around to thumbs 1 & 3, the traditional box. I just need to find a way to make it fresh and not so traditional, which I hope to do by combining illustration and photography...Also, playing with an alteration of the existing logo.
Also, just a heads up - it seems like common sense, but I just wanted to relay to you all, from personal experience, eating bruschetta and olive tapenade while sketching...yeah, not the best idea.

Proj. 1: digitals
I was trying to post a recap of what I brought in last time for the digitals critique for the packaging, but for some reason I'm having a real problem with my images on here. They're discolored, portions are missing, etc (real surprise). Anyway, I tried to do something different, adding a little more color (but retaining the white, the negative space), and focusing a bit more on the different flavors. There are three flavors now for the squeeze tubes: Kiwi/Strawberry, French Vanilla/German Chocolate, and Boysenberry/Original Tart. Here's what I have for the revised designs.
Ugh! Again, the colors are posting waaaay off and major components are not posting at all (nutrition facts, ingredients, mL). The jpeg looks fine on my comp, but something's lost in translation by the time it uploads to blogger. Anyone?...please?
Hopefully I can figure this out for you guys before I bring my beautiful little mock-ups on Thursday!
Project 1: stationery set
Here's a shot of the new stationery set I brought in last week, utilizing the Menchie's logo (slightly revised) and existing colors. I wanted to see what I could do with the revised logo and style to retain a playful vibe within a high-end product targeted mostly at adults and families.
Aaaaand, it looks like the colors are a little off in this post. No idea why (if anyone knows, that info would be much appreciated). Also, I sure wish these would post a little larger.
